Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
Second stage of the Spiritual Variant, considered one of the most beautiful of the entire Camino. After leaving the monastery of A Armenteira, the route descends along the Ruta da Pedra e da Auga, an interpretive trail that follows the course of the Armenteira River for several kilometers passing by more than fifty old flour mills, fulling mills and riverside forests. After the descent, the path crosses the vineyards of the Salnés valley, the cradle of Albariño wine, and reaches the coast at Vilanova de Arousa, a fishing village on the banks of the Arousa estuary. About 24 km of route with a steep descent at the beginning and a smooth profile in the second half.
This stage takes place on a soft and undulating terrain, departing from the province of Palencia to enter that of León. The road passes through "The Devil's Cuesta", a small stretch of toboggans, before smoothing out again. It goes through small villages such as Terradillos de los Templarios. The end of the stage is in Sahagún, a town of immense historical and artistic importance, considered the heart of the French Way and the cradle of Mudéjar art. Its heritage, with the churches of San Lorenzo and San Tirso, and the ruins of the Monastery of San Benito, is impressive.
