Stage Description

This stage of the Forgotten Way takes the pilgrim out of Bilbao's great city to lead them into the Las Encartaciones countryside. The profile is demanding, with a strong initial ascent. The landscape combines industrial zones with green valleys and mountainous areas. The destination is historic Balmaseda village, the first town in Bizkaia, with its iconic medieval bridge. It is a monumental stop in a rural setting.
The stage that joins Bilbao with Balmaseda is a day of contrasts. The exit from the great city is demanding, with the climb up Mount Kobetas. Once the urban zone has been overcome, the road enters the Las Encartaciones countryside, following the course of the Cadagua River. The most important point of the day is arrival in Balmaseda, the first town founded in Basque Country. Its medieval historic center, with its Old Bridge or of the Muz, San Severino Church and palaces, is exceptional beauty. It is indispensable to dedicate time to explore it.
