Stage Description

This is one of the longest and most demanding stages of the Portuguese Way, but also one of the most beautiful. The profile is a continuous "broken bone" through a rural landscape of great charm. The route passes through numerous small villages, vineyards and forests. The main difficulty is the climb to Alto da Portela, which requires good effort. The reward is arriving in Ponte de Lima, considered the oldest town in Portugal. Its impressive Roman-medieval bridge over the Lima River and its well-preserved historic quarter make it one of the most beautiful stops along the entire route.
The stage that connects Barcelos to Ponte de Lima is one of the longest and most challenging sections of the Portuguese route, but its beauty far surpasses the effort. The profile is a continuous up and down, with considerable accumulated incline. The road runs through a very varied landscape, alternating zones of cultivation with dense forests. Numerous villages and parishes are crossed in an extremely rural and authentic environment. The main mountainous difficulty is the ascent to Alto da Portela de Tamel, an demanding climb that offers magnificent views from the top. After the climb, a long descent leads the pilgrim towards the valley of the Lima River. The arrival at Ponte de Lima is spectacular. This village, considered the oldest in Portugal, is of extraordinary beauty. Its main distinguishing feature is its very long bridge, with a Roman and medieval section, which majestically crosses the Lima River. Its historic center, perfectly preserved, with its gardens, sun-drenched houses and lively atmosphere, makes it an unforgettable stop. It's a place to stroll, enjoy local cuisine (especially "arroz de sarrabulho") and rest by the river.
