Barcelos, an enchanting town in the heart of the Minho region, is one of the most symbolic and picturesque stops on the Portuguese Way. Its name is indissolubly linked to the famous legend of the Pilgrim's Rooster, a Jacobean miracle that tells the story of how a roasted rooster sang to prove the innocence of an unjustly accused pilgrim. This event made the "Rooster of Barcelos" one of Portugal's most recognizable icons. For the pilgrim, the town offers a rich heritage, with its medieval bridge over the Cávado River, the ruins of the Palace of the Counts of Barcelos and a historic quarter full of charm. It is especially famous for its large weekly market, one of the country's biggest, a feast of colors, flavors and local handicrafts. The tradition of pottery is very important, and ceramic figures, with the rooster at the head, can be found everywhere.
