Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

A long day through the Montes de Oca linking Belorado with the heart of the Sierra de Atapuerca. After leaving Belorado, the Camino climbs gently towards Villafranca Montes de Oca and enters the oak and pine woods of the puerto de la Pedraja, the loneliest and most wooded section of the day. Once past San Juan de Ortega, with its Romanesque church and the miracle of the equinoctial light, the route descends through holm-oak woods to Agés and reaches Atapuerca, famous for its World Heritage archaeological sites. It is a stage made demanding by its distance, with few services in the middle section, and one to set out on with enough water and food.
