Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
The longest stage of O Camiño dos Faros, 32.6 kilometres, is nevertheless one of the most manageable: the profile is almost flat and much of the route runs along forest track and path. The day leaves the sea to work around the ría by way of Ponte do Porto and Cereixo, where the Romanesque church of Santiago, a tidal mill and a thirty-metre oak are preserved. Back on the coast, the path strings together the beaches of Leis, Lago — an essential stop halfway through the stage — Os Muíños and Espiñeirido, with the lighthouses of Punta do Lago and Muxía as reference points. Monte Corpiño, already above the town, offers the best sunset on the route before the descent to the santuario da Virxe da Barca.
At 32.6 kilometres, the sixth stage is the longest on O Camiño dos Faros, but also one of the least hard. The route is practically flat and alternates minor road, forest track and sand, so the ten hours estimated have more to do with the distance than with the difficulty of the terrain.
The way out of Camariñas skirts the beaches of Area da Vila, Ariño and Area Grande and soon says goodbye to the open sea: to get around the ría you have to follow it up as far as Ponte do Porto, the most inland point on the whole route. It is a quiet stretch, among hamlets such as Tasaraño, Dor and Allo, with the estuary always in view.
Cereixo concentrates the heritage of the day. There stands the church of Santiago, a Romanesque building whose doorway depicts the translation of the Apostle, and beside the shore a tidal mill and an oak thirty metres tall are preserved, one of the most remarkable oaks in Galicia. From this point the path returns to the coast for good.
The return to the coast brings the best part of the stage: the beaches of Leis, Lago, Muíños, Espiñeirido and Cruz follow one another almost without interruption, with the lighthouse of Punta do Lago as a reference point. The beach of Lago, halfway along, is the natural stop for lunch. Beyond the beach of O Coído, the path climbs monte Corpiño, a viewpoint over the whole of the coast already walked and one of the best places on the route to watch the sunset.
The descent leads to the santuario da Virxe da Barca, on the point of Muxía, where the Pedra de Abalar and the Pedra dos Cadrís rest, two granite formations tied to the legend of the stone boat in which the Virgin is said to have appeared to the Apostle. The lighthouse of Muxía closes the stage beside the town.
