Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

This stage has as its destination one of the most fascinating cities in history: Córdoba. The route is long but mostly flat, following the Guadajoz River valley and entering into the countryside. The landscape is agricultural, with large areas of cultivation. The final stretch becomes more urban as it approaches the capital. The entry to Córdoba and the discovery of its historic quarter, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its Mezquita-Cathedral, Alcázar, and Jewish Quarter, is an unforgettable experience and one of the major highlights of any pilgrimage in southern Spain.
The stage that leads to Córdoba is a long but packed journey of anticipation for arriving at one of the world's most monumental cities. The profile is very favorable, practically flat, allowing comfortable progress through the Cordobese countryside. The route starts in Castro del Río and, after passing through the local town of Espejo, enters a landscape of vast fields of grain and sunflowers. The road runs on dirt and asphalt paths, in a very rural environment. As one approaches Córdoba, the landscape is changing, becoming more urban. The entrance to the city is long, but the effort is rewarded upon arriving at the Roman Bridge over the Guadalquivir River, with the imposing silhouette of the Mezquita-Catedral in the background. Reaching Córdoba is a culminating moment. The city, ancient capital of Al-Ándalus, is a treasure World Heritage Site. It is essential to dedicate at least one afternoon (or an entire day) to explore its wonders. A visit to the Mezquita-Catedral is a unique spiritual and artistic experience in the world. Getting lost in the narrow streets of the Judería neighborhood, discovering patios filled with flowers, visiting the Alcázar of the Christian Monarchs or simply enjoying the atmosphere of their taverns are experiences that enrich the Camino enormously.
