Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

Stage through the Alberche valley, in the Gredos mountains of Avila. The 20 km link Cebreros (famous for its wine D.O. Cebreros and for being the headquarters of the Cebreros Deep Space Antenna of the Mars Express project) with San Bartolomé de Pinares, a small village in the mountains of Avila famous for Las Luminarias, a pagan festival of San Antón in which knights cross large bonfires on horseback.
The stage that starts from Galisteo is a journey through time to the Roman era. The path enters the Ambroz Valley, on a gentle ascending terrain. The route follows the ancient Roman road faithfully, and the pilgrim can walk over original tracts and see several milestones. The destination and main attraction of the journey are the ruins of the Roman city of Cáparra. This archaeological site is one of the most important along the Via de la Plata. Its icon is the Arco of Cáparra, an impressive quadrifrontal arch (of four faces) that stood in the center of the city's forum. Walking through the cardo and decumano of the ancient city, visiting its interpretation center, and contemplating the arch is an unforgettable experience. The end of the stage usually takes place in Oliva de Plasencia, the closest town to the site, which provides the necessary services for the pilgrim.
