Stage Description
After the ruggedness of the mountain, this long stage is mainly downhill. The road takes the pilgrim from the heights of the Ernici Mountains to the valley of the Liri River. It's a transitional day that allows for recovery. The main prize of the day is arriving at the Abbey of Casamari, one of the gems of Gothic Cistercian architecture in Italy. Its church, cloister and chapter room are of exceptional beauty. It's a monumental final stage and very spiritually rewarding.
The Collepardo to Casamari stage is a 24.9 km long journey with a predominantly descending profile. The path starts in Collepardo (586 m) and descends through the valley of the Liri River, into a landscape of hills and cultivated fields. The route follows dirt tracks and rural roads, in a beautiful surroundings. It's an enjoyable walk that allows you to appreciate the scenery and the tranquility of the environment. Arrival at the Casamari Abbey (320 m) is a moment of great excitement. This Cistercian abbey, one of Italy's most important, is a gem of Gothic architecture. Its church, cloisters, and chapter hall are of exceptional beauty. Visiting the abbey is an unforgettable experience. It's a stage that combines gentle exercise with rich cultural experience, a perfect balance on the Way of St. Benedict.
