Stage Description
This 19.3 km stage is one of the most representative of the Palatine Tableland. It characterizes itself as a practically flat and straight route that often runs parallel to the road, through the vastness of the Land of Fields. It's a journey that puts the pilgrim's mental strength to the test, with a monotonous but inviting landscape for deep meditation. The path passes by small agricultural towns such as Población de Campos and Villalcázar de Sirga, the latter having an imposing temple-fortress of Santa María la Blanca that well deserves a visit. The final stage ends in historic Carrión de los Condes, a town of great importance to Jacobean pilgrimage with a rich monumental heritage, ideal for rest.
The 19.3 km stretch between Frómista and Carrión de los Condes is the essence of the Palentine Field Country. The pilgrim faces one of the flattest and straightest stages of all the French Way, a mental challenge rather than physical. The route advances along a compact earth path that runs parallel to the road, through an endless landscape of cereal fields.
The absence of shadows and the monotony of the landscape invite introspection and meditation. It is in stages like this where many pilgrims find space for inner dialogue, accompanied only by the sound of the wind and the horizon.
Halfway along, Villalcázar de Sirga is found, a place of great historical and artistic importance. The town is dominated by the imposing church-fortress of Santa María la Blanca, a magnificent example of Gothic transition with strong Templar influence. Its portico and interior, featuring the polychromed sepulchers of Infante Don Felipe and his wife, are spectacular.
After visiting Villalcázar, the path continues over the same plain until arrival in Carrión de los Condes. This village, of great importance in the history of the Way, was an important cultural and religious center. It offers the pilgrim a rich heritage, highlighting the Monastery of San Zoilo, with its Renaissance cloister, the church of Santiago, featuring a magnificent Romanesque frieze, and the church of Santa María del Camino. Carrión is a welcoming city with all necessary services for a well-deserved rest.
