Steps of Salome to A Fonsagrada

The stage from Grandas de Salime to A Fonsagrada is a long and demanding day that represents the last major mountain challenge of the Primitive Way. The pilgrim must overcome the ascent to Puerto del Acebo, which marks the entry into Galicia. The path leaves Grandas and begins to ascend almost immediately. The climb is long, about 7 kilometers, and is done mostly on local roads. As altitude is gained, views of the valley and Asturian mountains become spectacular. The summit of Puerto del Acebo, at 1,050 meters, is a symbolic place. A stone monument welcomes pilgrims to Galicia, the land of the Apostle. From here, the landscape changes, becoming more green and undulating. The final stretch leads to A Fonsagrada, whose name (sacred spring) alludes to a miraculous spring. Located at high altitude, the town is often swept by wind and fog but receives pilgrims with the warmth of its people and robust gastronomy. It's an important service center and a perfect place to celebrate the arrival at the last province of the Way.
