Stage Description

This stage of the Forgotten Way continues to skirt the Ebro reservoir, on a terrain of gentle undulations. It is a day of great landscape beauty, with water and mountains as protagonists. The route passes through small Cantabrian villages that preserve their rural charm. The path approaches the official birthplace of the Ebro River in Fontibre. The destination is the small village of Olea, a haven of peace in the Campoo region, ideal for a quiet rest.
The route that unites Arija with Olea is an enjoyable stroll through the Cantabrian countryside of Campoo. The profile is mainly flat, with gentle undulations, and the road follows the banks of the Ebro Reservoir. The landscape is of great beauty, with the waters of the reservoir on one side and the mountains of the Cantabrian Mountains on the other. The most important point of the stage is a visit to Fontibre, where the official source of the River Ebro is found. It's a beautiful place, with a crystal-clear spring that gives rise to Spain's most voluminous river. After visiting Fontibre, the road continues until the small town of Olea. It's a traditional village with a lovely Romanesque church. Its tranquil atmosphere is perfect for the pilgrim's rest, allowing total immersion in nature and history, making it an ideal stage to recover strength and enjoy the landscape before returning to Palentine territory.
