Stage Description

This stage immerses the pilgrim in the Astur-Leonese mountain range. The route is of exceptional beauty but also considerable demand. The ascent continues through the valley of Bernesga, passing by villages with traditional mountain architecture such as Buiza. The landscape is dominated by forests, high-altitude meadows and the peaks of the Cantabrian Mountains. It's a journey of solitude and pure nature that culminates in the small and welcoming village of Poladura de la Tercia, an authentic mountain refuge at over 1,100 meters above sea level, ideal for rest before tackling the legendary Puerto de Pajares.
The stage from La Robla to Poladura of the Third is one of the most beautiful and alpine sections of the Way of Salvador. The pilgrim enters the heart of the Cantabrian Mountains, following a constant ascent that follows the valley of the Bernesga River. The landscape changes, leaving behind any industrial vestiges to make way for a virgin natural environment.

The path runs through mountain trails and tranquil local roads. Villages are crossed that preserve the essence of mountain architecture, with their stone houses and slate roofs. Buiza is one of the last inhabited nuclei before the final stretch. It's an stage to enjoy the silence, fresh air, and spectacular views of the surrounding peaks and valleys.

The journey is demanding, with a considerable positive gradient that accumulates throughout the day. It's essential to bring water and provisions, as services are very scarce.

Arrival in Poladura de la Tercia, a small mountain village located over 1,100 meters above sea level, is a reward for effort. This place, with its albergue and alpine refuge atmosphere, is the perfect spot to rest and prepare physically and mentally for the next stage: crossing the Pajares Pass and entering Asturias.
