Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
This is the inaugural stage of the Camino del Salvador, the historic route that connects León with Oviedo. The journey begins saying goodbye to the majestic Cathedral of León and entering a landscape that transitions from urban to industrial and finally to rural. The road largely follows the course of the Bernesga River in a gentle but constant ascent which serves as preparation for the tough mountain stages that await. Arrival at La Robla, a village with a mining past, marks the end of an acclimatization day at the foot of the Cantabrian Mountains.
The Way of Salvador begins in León, uniting two of Spain's most important cathedrals. This first stage is a transition that moves the pilgrim away from the Meseta and brings him closer to the imposing Cantabrian Mountains. The departure from León is a long urban stretch that gradually gives way to a riverbank landscape following the course of the Bernesga River.
