Stage Description

Asturian coastal stage of about 30 km. The route leaves Llanes and runs along coastal paths bordering spectacular beaches such as Toró and Gulpiyuri (inland beach, Natural Monument). The landscape combines cliffs, cattle meadows and traditional villages with Asturian hórreos. Ribadesella, on the banks of the river Sella, is famous for its cave paintings in the cave of Tito Bustillo (UNESCO World Heritage) and for celebrating every August the International Descent of the Sella in canoe.
The stage that unites Madrid with San Lorenzo of El Escorial is an demanding day that serves as a prologue to the Uclés Way or as a pilgrimage route in itself. The departure from the great city is the most tedious part, but once in open country, the path begins a continuous ascent towards the Sierra de Guadarrama. The landscape changes, and the heathlands and oak woodlands gain ground. The arrival at San Lorenzo of El Escorial is the day's climax. This mountain village houses one of the world's marvels: the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo of El Escorial. This imposing complex, commissioned by Philip II, is both a palace, monastery, basilica, and royal pantheon. A visit is indispensable and requires several hours. The village of San Lorenzo, with its cottages and mountain atmosphere, is the perfect place to rest after a hard day's journey.
