Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
This is one of the longest and most difficult stages of the Via de la Plata, a journey across the Meseta Norte plain that connects two monumental capitals. The profile is flat, but the distance and monotony of the landscape make it a challenge. The route passes through the Land of Wine, in an environment of fields and vineyards. Arrival in Zamora, "the Romanesque capital", with its spectacular Cathedral and its walls over the Duero River, is the reward for a titanic effort.
The stage that links the two major Romanesque capitals, Salamanca and Zamora, is a marathon journey. The profile is mainly flat, but the distance is a considerable challenge. The road enters the Wine Country region, in a landscape of gentle undulations covered with vineyards and fields of grain. The route passes through El Cubo de la Tierra del Vino, a good point for an intermediate rest stop. It's a stage of great solitude, ideal for introspection. Arrival in Zamora is the day's big prize. This city, on the banks of the Duero River, is an outdoor art museum. Its Cathedral, with its spectacular Byzantine dome, is a unique gem. But Zamora has over twenty Romanesque churches, a castle, walls, and an enchanting old town. It's a city to stroll around, discover its corners, and enjoy its rich gastronomy.
