Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

Leaving behind the vibrant Logroño, this 29.2 km stage fully enters the heart of La Rioja. The route is a delight for the senses, winding its way through a sea of vineyards that define the landscape. The first part is an enjoyable stroll through the Park of la Grajera, with its reservoir. The road passes through villages with a strong vitivinicultural flavor such as Navarrete, famous for its ceramics and its church of the Assumption. The profile is undulating, with an ascent to San Antón Hill that offers magnificent views of the vineyards before descending towards Nájera, ancient capital of the kingdom and cradle of kings, with its impressive Monastery of Santa María la Real as its main attraction.
Leaving Logroño involves fully immersing oneself in one of the most iconic landscapes of the Camino Francés: the vineyard sea of La Rioja. This 29.2 km stage is long but rewarding, with an undulating profile that offers breathtaking views. The departure from the city is comfortable and pleasant, passing through the Park of the Grajera, a green lung with a large reservoir offering a refreshing start to the day.

The path continues among vineyards until reaching Navarrete, a town with a great tradition in pottery and Jacobean heritage. Its main street and the imposing church of the Assumption, in baroque style, are worth visiting. After Navarrete, the pilgrim faces the only significant ascent of the day, the Alto de San Antón. From its summit, fantastic panoramic views of the region can be obtained, a landscape of hills covered with vines.

The descent leads to Ventosa, and from there the path follows reddish dirt tracks, characteristic of the region, until reaching the historic city of Nájera. Bathed by the Najerilla River and protected by imposing granite pebbles, Nájera was a royal court and an important enclave in the Middle Ages. Its main treasure is the Monastery of Santa María la Real, founded in the 11th century, which houses the Panteón de los Reyes of Nájera-Pamplona and a magnificent Knights' Cloister. A visit to this monastery is the crowning glory of an etapa that combines nature, wine culture, and history.
