Stage Description
This stage crosses the Cantabrian mountain range from the north of Leon to Asturias via the Tarna pass. The 18 km include a continuous ascent to the pass (1,490 m) among beech, oak and high meadows. Pueblo de Tarna, in the Asturian council of Caso, is the first Asturian locality of this variant of the Austrian Way, anteroom of the Nalón valley.
The stage that connects Medina del Campo to Tordesillas is a transition day that brings the pilgrim to the banks of the Duero River. The profile is very favorable, practically flat. The landscape remains that of the Castilian tableland, with large areas of cultivation. The road runs on dirt tracks and tranquil local roads. Arrival in Tordesillas is the climax of the stage. This village, situated on a promontory over the Duero River, has great importance in universal history. It was here, in 1494, that the Treaty of Tordesillas was signed, dividing navigation and conquest zones of the Atlantic Ocean between Spain and Portugal. The pilgrim can visit the Houses of the Treaty. Additionally, Tordesillas boasts an exceptional heritage, such as the Real Monastery of Santa Clara, a jewel of Mudéjar art, and its beautiful Castilian Plaza Mayor. It is the end of a stage with an incalculable historical value.
