Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

This stage offers a long and pronounced descent from the high mountain to the valley of the River Sarria. The profile is demanding for the knees, but the landscape is of great beauty. The route passes through rural Galicia, with beech and oak forests, and small villages. The path goes through the village of Samos, with its impressive monastery. Arrival in Sarria, the most important town on the French Way in Galicia, marks the end of the stage.
The stage that unites Fonfría with Sarria is a day of contrasts. The first part continues in the high mountain zone, before starting a long and pronounced descent into the valley. The descent, although demanding for the joints, runs through a beautiful landscape, through native forests and "corridors". It passes by Triacastela, where the road bifurcates. This route follows the Samos variant. The big prize of the day is the arrival at this town, which hosts the Real Monastery of San Julián de Samos, one of the most important monasteries in Spain. A guided visit to the monastery is a first-order cultural and spiritual experience. From Samos, an enjoyable river walk leads the pilgrim to Sarria. This village is the chosen starting point for the majority of pilgrims who want to cover the last 100 kilometers to obtain the Compostela.
