Stage Description
Second day on the high plateau of northwest Murcia. The stage runs along rural roads between cereal fields and dry crops, with continuous views of the mountains of La Muela and El Gigante. After about 25 km of undulating profile we arrive at La Encarnación, an archaeological site near Caravaca de la Cruz where the remains of the Roman sanctuary dedicated to Jupiter Stator and testimonies of Argaric occupation are preserved. Caravaca is one of the five Holy Cities of Catholicism, with its own Jubilee Year every seven years around the Vera Cruz.
The stage between Sarria and Morgade is an immersion into the heart of rural Galicia. The profile is a continuous rocky terrain, with no great ascensions but constant ups and downs. The path runs for the most part through "corridors", ancient sunken roads flanked by stone walls. Numerous traditional villages are crossed, such as Barbadelo. One of the most anticipated moments comes near the village of Peruscallo, where a granite milestone marks the symbolic "mile 100" to Santiago, a place of celebration and obligatory photography. The arrival in the small village of Morgade, with its hostel and rural atmosphere, is the end of this short stage.
