Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
Stage of the Camino Manchego through the Montes de Toledo, with an undulating route of about 22 km between pastures, oak groves and olive groves. The route passes through small rural towns and allows to contemplate the mountain landscape of Toledo. Sonseca is one of the main towns in the Montes de Toledo region, famous for its production of marzipan (D.O. Mazapán de Toledo) and for its rich tradition of craftsmanship and confectionery.
Leaving the beautiful city of Zamora, "the capital of Romanesque", implies entering into the vast plain of the Meseta Norte. The first stage of the Via de la Plata from Zamora is a very gentle journey with a light ascent that the pilgrim barely notices. The landscape is dominated by fields of cereal in an open horizon and vast skies. The road runs on dirt tracks and quiet local roads. One of the points of interest is passing through the Esla reservoir, where aquatic birds can be observed. Arrival at Montamarta marks the end of the stage. This town is famous for its unique church of San Miguel, whose tower combines Romanesque and Byzantine elements, and for its Zangarrón festival, one of the most ancient winter masquerades in the peninsula. It's a quiet stop that allows the pilgrim to have their first contact with the towns of the Via de la Plata.
