Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

Final stage of the Camino Manchego, a 24 km journey that ends in the imperial city of Toledo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former capital of the Visigothic and Castilian kingdoms. The route leaves the foothills of the Montes de Toledo and descends gently towards the valley of the Tajo. The arrival in Toledo via the San Martín Bridge and the Alcazar slope is one of the most memorable moments of the route, with views of the primate cathedral, the medieval synagogues and the city of the three cultures (Christian, Jewish and Muslim).
The journey between Montamarta and Granja de Moreruela is a flat stage that traverses the Terra del Pan region. The road advances on dirt tracks through fields of cereal, in a landscape of great amplitude. The main attraction of the stage is its destination. A few kilometers from the town of Granja de Moreruela, are found the imposing ruins of the Monastery of Santa María de Moreruela. It was one of the first Cistercian monasteries in Spain and one of the most powerful of the Middle Ages. Walking among the walls of its church, with its seven apses, is a journey through time. The visit is indispensable. Arrival at Granja de Moreruela is a crucial turning point for the pilgrim. In this small town, the Via de la Plata forks. One can continue northwards towards Astorga to join the Camino Francés or take the detour westwards by the Camino Sanabrés towards Santiago through Ourense. It's a point of reflection and an milestone in the pilgrimage.
