Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

The approach to Toledo, the great monumental city of the Camino del Sureste. You leave Mascaraque beside the hermitage of La Veracruz and advance through the district of La Sisla to Almonacid de Toledo, whose castle, perched on a bare hill, is visible several kilometres ahead and forms the visual landmark of the stage. The path then undulates among holm oaks and olive groves along the foothills of the Sierra de Layos, with short but dry climbs, before descending towards the Tagus plain. The arrival in Toledo, with the townscape climbing above the river meander and the spire of the Primate Cathedral outlined in the distance, is one of the most memorable entrances of the whole route.
Almost twenty-nine kilometres separate Mascaraque from Toledo in a stage of broken but not truly hard profile, combining agricultural flatland, a stretch of gentle sierra and a final descent to the Tagus. This is the day that ends the Manchegan crossing and delivers the pilgrim to the first of the great cities of the Camino del Sureste.

The departure from Mascaraque is by the northern edge of the village, past the hermitage of La Veracruz, following the left-hand side of the road towards the cemetery. Soon the silhouette that dominates this district appears in the distance: the castle of Almonacid, a fortress of Muslim origin rebuilt by the Christians, raised on a hill visible from the whole surrounding plain. Almonacid de Toledo is reached after some six kilometres and preserves, besides its castle, the parish church of San Antonio Abad, with canvases by Alonso del Arco.

Beyond Almonacid the path enters La Sisla proper, the transitional district linking the Mancha with the Toledo plain. The terrain becomes rolling, with scattered holm oaks, old olive groves and the occasional short ramp between hills; it is the most solitary stretch of the day and also the most beautiful, with the foothills of the Sierra de Layos closing the horizon to the south.

The final third descends steadily towards the Tagus valley. The entrance to Toledo comes with the view of the city from the south, the townscape terraced on the rock, the square Alcázar on high and the tower of the Primate Cathedral rising among the roofs. Toledo, a World Heritage Site, deserves a long stop: the Gothic cathedral, the Tránsito synagogue, Santa María la Blanca, the church of Santo Tomé with The Burial of the Count of Orgaz, the monastery of San Juan de los Reyes and the Bisagra Gate are enough to fill an afternoon and much of the following day. For the pilgrim it is also a place to resupply and rest before facing the sierra of Ávila.
