Stage Description
This stage enters the heart of Baztán Valley. The day begins with an ascent to Otsondo port, the main difficulty of the day. Once at the top, a long and pleasant descent leads the pilgrim through the valley. The landscape is idyllic in beauty, with dense grasslands, oak and beech forests, and scattered farmhouses. The route passes by small villages with charm. The destination is Elizondo, the capital of the valley, a noble town with a rich heritage of palaces and blazoned houses, and an animated atmosphere.
The stage that connects Urdax with Elizondo is a total immersion in the magical Baztán Valley. The journey is marked by crossing the Otsondo Pass. The ascent, although not excessively long, is demanding. Once the pass is crowned, spectacular views of the valley are obtained which stretch at its feet. From there on, a long and pleasant descent begins. The landscape is breathtakingly beautiful, a mosaic of dense grasslands, lush forests and characteristic Baztán cottages with their two-story roofs and stone and wood facades. The path passes through several small villages that preserve all their charm. Arrival in Elizondo, the valley's capital, marks the end of the stage. This noble village, divided by the Baztán River, boasts an impressive collection of palaces and blazoned houses such as Arizkunenea Palace. Its lively atmosphere, rich gastronomy and complete range of services make it a must-visit destination.
