Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
Until the Camino Primitivo and Francés are unified, this stage is a pleasant walk through Galicia's most gentle landscape. The profile is smooth, with constant but short ascents and descents that run along comfortable earth tracks and forest paths. The path crosses a meadow and eucalyptus forest landscape, crossing several streams via medieval bridges, such as the one in Ribadiso. This stage is very popular, ideal for socializing with other pilgrims. The final day ends in Arzúa, famous for its cheese with Denomination of Origin, where, additionally, the Camino del Norte is also incorporated, increasing the peregrine atmosphere even more.
Once the Camino Primitivo was unified with the French Way in Melide, the stage to Arzúa became a crucible of pilgrims. It is a short and pleasant journey that allows for relaxed walking. The profile is the characteristic Galician "break-stone" but with very gentle slopes. The route runs through a beautiful landscape, alternating shaded dirt paths through oak and eucalyptus forests, with sections that cross green meadows and small villages. The scent of eucalyptus and damp field is constant. One of the most picturesque points on the stage is the village of Ribadiso da Baixo, just before Arzúa. Here, a beautiful medieval bridge crosses the Iso River, alongside which one of the public hostels with the most charm can be found. The final stage ends with the ascent to Arzúa. This important town is known as "the land of cheese" for its famous Tetilla cheese, protected by the Arzúa-Ulloa Denomination of Origin. Additionally, the Camino del Norte also converges in Arzúa, so the pilgrim atmosphere is even more intense if possible. The church of Santiago and the chapel of the Magdalena are its main monuments.
