Stage Description
A stage towards Aulnay, in the department of Charente-Maritime. The roughly 21 km cross the boundary between Poitou and the Charentes. Aulnay is famous for its Romanesque church of Saint-Pierre (11th-12th centuries), one of the masterpieces of the Saintonge Romanesque and UNESCO World Heritage as part of the Chemins de Saint-Jacques en France, with its spectacular sculpted façade.
The stage from Melle to Aulnay-de-Saintonge is a day that ends at one of the jewels of Romanesque art in all of France. The way sets out from Melle and follows a mostly downhill profile, though with some undulations, as far as the village of Aulnay-de-Saintonge. The route crosses a landscape of great beauty, with farmland and woods. It is a pleasant walk that lets you enjoy the scenery and arrive with time to explore the destination. Arrival in Aulnay-de-Saintonge is a deeply moving moment for art lovers. Its church of Saint-Pierre, a World Heritage Site, is an architectural gem. It is a stage that combines gentle exercise with a rich artistic experience, a perfect balance on the Via Turonensis.
