Stage Description
A stage that draws close to the Gironde estuary. The roughly 22 km leave Charente-Maritime to enter the Gironde, in the heart of the Bordeaux vineyard country. Saint-Aubin-de-Blaye is a small rural village in the Blayais vineyard area, with a winemaking tradition and a well-preserved rural centre.
With this stage the Way leaves Charente-Maritime and enters the Gironde, drawing close to the great estuary that will have to be crossed two days later. It is a day of moderate length and gentle profile, through a landscape of low hills where the vine gradually takes over from fields of cereals and sunflowers.
Mirambeau, the starting point, is dominated by its château, rebuilt in the nineteenth century in Renaissance style. The route descends from the town and soon reaches Petit-Niort, whose small Romanesque church preserves a singular window of pierced stone in a very ancient tradition.
The way continues south along tracks and local roads, among plots of vines and copses of pine and oak. Shortly after crossing the departmental boundary comes Pleine-Selve, where the church of a former abbey survives, a vestige of one of the religious houses that punctuated the route and gave assistance to travellers.
The final part of the stage crosses the gentle swells of the Blayais, with the marshy plain of the estuary spread out to the west. The vineyards already belong to the appellations of the right bank of the Gironde, and the wine estates, with their cellars and low stone houses, follow one another on either side.
Saint-Aubin-de-Blaye is a small, scattered village of clearly agricultural character. Services are limited, so it is advisable to arrive with accommodation booked and dinner planned. The tranquillity of the place and the nearness of Blaye make it a serene pause before reaching the estuary.
