This stage of the Camino di San Benedetto offers a breath of fresh air after the previous ascent, with a profile that is mostly descending. The shorter route allows the pilgrim to enjoy a landscape that opens up towards the vast plateau of Leonessa. Abandoning the summits to enter an environment of meadows and fields of cultivation. It's an ideal day for recovering strength, walking at a more relaxed pace and enjoying the serene beauty of central Italy. The arrival in Leonessa, with its medieval charm, is a tranquil and welcoming end to the stage.
The stage that unites Monteleone di Spoleto with Leonessa is a 12.5km transition journey, shorter and with a predominantly descending profile, making it an enjoyable break for the pilgrim. The trail starts from the high Monteleone di Spoleto (978m) and begins a progressive descent towards the plateau of Leonessa. The route traverses a mountain landscape that gradually softens, giving way to extensive meadows and grazing areas. It is a walk that allows one to enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the Apennines. The journey, with no major technical difficulties, follows rural paths and roads in an environment of great tranquility. Arrival at Leonessa (755m), a town with a notable medieval and Renaissance heritage, is a very gratifying final stage. Its April 7th Square, with its palaces and fountain, is the heart of local life. The Church of San Pietro and the Sanctuary of San Giuseppe da Leonessa are among its attractions. It is an etapa that, despite its brevity, offers a rich experiential and cultural landscape, allowing the pilgrim to rest and prepare for the next stages in the heart of Italy.
