Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

This stage marks the entry into the Valley of Rieti, the heart of Franciscanism. The path winds its way up the mountain slopes on a moderate distance but with steep inclines. The landscape is of great beauty, with forests and views of the valley. Arrival at the Sanctuary of Poggio Bustone, a place of deep peace and spirituality where Saint Francis received the greeting "Good day, good people", is an emotionally charged moment for the pilgrim. It's a journey that combines physical effort with intense spiritual experience.
The stage from Leonessa to Poggio Bustone is a 14.6 km journey of great spiritual significance as it introduces the pilgrim into the Holy Valley of Rieti, a fundamental place in the life of Saint Francis of Assisi. The path starts at Leonessa (755 m) and enters a mountain landscape with an demanding profile that includes climbing up to a port more than 1,100 meters high. The route passes through beech forests and offers spectacular views of the valley. After the port, it begins a descent towards Poggio Bustone (818 m). Arrival at this Franciscan sanctuary is one of the most emotional moments on the path. It was here that Saint Francis and his first companions began their life of preaching, and where, according to tradition, an angel confirmed the pardon of his sins. The sanctuary, nestled in the mountain slope, is a place of deep peace and prayer. A visit to the cave of revelations and the temple is unforgettable. This stage, despite its difficulty, rewards the pilgrim with a total immersion in Franciscan spirituality and the beauty of the Apennines.
