Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

This is a short and gentle phase that aims to reach one of the jewels of Madrid's Baroque. The route is an enjoyable stroll through the Alcarria, between fields of cultivation. Arrival in Nuevo Baztán is a monumental surprise. This village, founded in the 18th century as an enlightened industrial project, is a historic-artistic ensemble of great value. Its palace-church, designed by José de Churriguera, and its porticoed plazas are of exceptional beauty. It is a cultural stop that is obligatory.
The stage that connects Pozuelo del Rey with Nuevo Baztán is a short but highly culturally interesting journey. The route runs through a terrain of gentle undulations, in a typical landscape of Alcarria. The big attraction of the stage is its destination: Nuevo Baztán. This village is an example of unique urbanism and baroque architecture. It was founded at the beginning of the 18th century by the enlightened Juan de Goyeneche as an industrial complex dedicated to glassmaking and other products. The ensemble, designed by famous architect José de Churriguera, consists of a majestic palace-church, porticoed plazas, and the workers' homes. Walking through its streets is like taking a journey through time to the era of the Enlightenment. The ensemble has been declared a Historic-Artistic Monument and a Site of Cultural Interest. It's a final stage that surprises and enriches the pilgrim.
