Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

The final stage of the Coastal Camino Portugués: a short and emotional day from O Milladoiro to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. The route is mostly downhill, descending gently through peri-urban areas before entering the historic centre of the city. It is a stage to savour, walking with the emotion of someone about to complete their pilgrimage. The arrival at the Plaza del Obradoiro, with the majestic facade of the Cathedral, is an unforgettable moment crowning days of effort and beauty.
The stage between O Milladoiro and Santiago de Compostela is the shortest and most emotional day of the entire Coastal Camino Portugués. At just 6 kilometres, the pilgrim can take their time and savour every step that brings them closer to the goal.

The path leaves O Milladoiro and descends gently through a landscape alternating between residential areas and small parks and green spaces. As it approaches Santiago, the atmosphere becomes more urban but also more exciting: yellow arrows and scallop shells mark the way with increasing frequency.

Santiago is entered through the Sar neighbourhood, where the beautiful Collegiate Church of Santa María del Sar stands, with its characteristic leaning buttresses, a Romanesque gem deserving a brief stop. From here, the path enters the city streets, passing through parks and tree-lined avenues.

The climactic moment arrives when the pilgrim enters the monumental zone. The cobbled streets of the historic centre, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lead inevitably towards the Plaza del Obradoiro. The first sight of the Cathedral's baroque facade is a moment of profound emotion that justifies every effort of the journey.

In the Cathedral, the pilgrim can attend the Pilgrim's Mass, embrace the statue of the Apostle Saint James, and, with luck, witness the flight of the Botafumeiro. The Pilgrim's Office, near the Cathedral, issues the Compostela to those who have walked at least the final 100 kilometres on foot. Santiago offers an inexhaustible wealth of monuments, gastronomy, and culture to celebrate the end of the Way.
