Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

First half of the final stage of the Camino Francés, setting out from O Pedrouzo at the pilgrim's dawn to reach Lavacolla after nearly ten kilometres. The Camino first plunges into lush eucalyptus and oak woods, rising and falling between the hamlets of O Amenal and Cimadevila, until it skirts the perimeter of Santiago airport by San Paio. Having cleared the highest point of the day, it descends towards Lavacolla, a place charged with symbolism: in its river, today's Sionlla, medieval pilgrims would wash so as to enter Compostela clean. It is a transitional stretch, still rural and wooded, that prepares the spirit for the imminent emotion of arriving in Santiago.
This first segment of some ten kilometres opens the final day of the Camino Francés, the one leading from O Pedrouzo to Santiago de Compostela. The route still keeps the rural, wooded character of Galicia, although the city's nearness begins to make itself felt in the bustle of the airport.

At dawn, faithful to the tradition of reaching the cathedral at midday, pilgrims leave O Pedrouzo, slipping into a dense mass of eucalyptus. The Camino rises and falls through the hamlets of San Antón, O Amenal and Cimadevila, where it tackles the last serious climb of the route.

Having crowned the rise, the path skirts the fence of Santiago airport at San Paio, alongside the runway, and reaches the highest point of the stage before beginning the descent. Shortly after, a sculpture of the pilgrim marks the turn-off towards Villamaior.

The Camino finally descends to Lavacolla, a parish crossed by the river Sionlla. Here, as the Codex Calixtinus relates, medieval pilgrims would stop to wash their bodies before presenting themselves to the Apostle, a rite that gave the place its name. Today Lavacolla, with its hotels and restaurants at the gates of Santiago, is a comfortable last stop before crowning the Monte do Gozo.
