Stage Description
This short, gentle day opens the split of the long stage to Muxía, designed for those who prefer to walk without haste and reach the Atlantic well rested. As soon as it leaves Olveiroa, the route drops down to the surroundings of the Xallas river and passes the spot of Ponte Olveira, one of the cascades that punctuate the river's course before its famous plunge into the sea at Ézaro. After a stretch among oak groves and meadows, it reaches the small hamlet of O Logoso and, shortly afterwards, the Hospital crossroads, where the Camino forks towards Finisterre or towards Muxía. Taking the Muxía branch, a comfortable route along tracks and paths leads to Dumbría, municipal capital and a natural rest point halfway along. It is a transitional stage, with no great demands, that saves strength for the long day ahead.
Splitting the demanding stage between Olveiroa and Muxía turns this first half into a short, restful day of barely 10.7 kilometres, ideal for those who wish to enjoy the Jacobean epilogue without the toughness of tackling the original thirty-odd kilometres in one go. The route runs through the interior of the Costa da Morte, among low hills, stone hamlets and the characteristic Galician hórreos.
The departure from Olveiroa soon drops towards the valley of the Xallas river, the true protagonist of these lands. The walker crosses the spot of Ponte Olveira, one of the cascades the river strings together along its course before plunging into the ocean at the spectacular Fervenza do Ézaro. Beyond the river, a stretch among oak groves and farmland leads to the small hamlet of O Logoso, with its services for the pilgrim.
Shortly afterwards comes the Hospital crossroads, an enclave laden with Jacobean memory whose place name recalls an old pilgrims' hospital. Here the Camino forks: one branch heads towards Finisterre and the End of the Earth, and the other towards Muxía and its sanctuary by the sea. Taking this second direction, the route continues comfortably along tracks and rural paths.
The arrival at Dumbría, capital of this large inland municipality, brings a calm pause to the day. The village offers a hostel and guesthouses in which to recover strength, and nearby unfold the natural attractions of the Xallas valley, with the famous Ézaro waterfall as the jewel of the municipality. It is the perfect place to spend the night and face the long approach to the Atlantic with energy.
