Leaving behind the monumental Ponferrada, this stage enters the Bierzo comarca. The route is an enjoyable stroll over flat terrain, between vineyards and orchards. It's a day to enjoy the landscape and the tranquility of the road. Arrival in Villafranca del Bierzo, "the little Compostela", with its Puerta del Perdón and rich heritage, is a stage finale with charm. It's a transition day that brings the pilgrim closer to the mythical ascent to O Cebreiro.
The stage from Ponferrada to Villafranca del Bierzo is a 24km journey that enters the Bierzo region. The route starts in Ponferrada (500m) and follows a mainly flat profile, with some undulations, until the town of Villafranca del Bierzo (500m). The route passes through a beautiful landscape, with vineyards and orchards. It is a peaceful and easy walk that allows you to enjoy the scenery and arrive in time to explore the destination town. Villafranca del Bierzo, known as "the little Compostela", is one of the most interesting stops on the French Way. Its heritage, including its Perdón Gate and rich patrimony, make it a very special stop. It's an easy stage that combines gentle exercise with a rich historical experience, a perfect balance in the French Way.
