Stage Description
This is one of the most emblematic stages of the French Way. The ascent to Iron Cross, the highest point on the route, is a moment of great emotion and spirituality. After crowning, a long and vertiginous descent takes the pilgrim to the Bierzo region. It's a high mountain journey, full of beauty and demand. Arrival in Ponferrada, with its impressive Templar castle, is a monumental final stage. It's an epic journey that marks a before and after on the route.
The Rabanal to Ponferrada stage of the Camino Francés is one of its most iconic stages, a 33km journey that includes the ascent to Iron Cross. The route starts at Rabanal del Camino (1150m) and follows a high mountain profile with continuous ascent exceeding 1500 meters at Iron Cross. The route traverses an impressive landscape, dense forests, deep valleys, and panoramic views lost in the horizon. It is a very solitary journey requiring excellent physical preparation and good planning. The wild beauty of the surroundings is the great reward for effort. After topping the pass, it begins a long descent to Ponferrada (500m), with its impressive Templar castle. This is an epic stage that puts the pilgrim's limits to the test but leaves an indelible mark due to its beauty and wild character.
