Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
A stage that ends in Dax, a spa town in the Landes famous for its mineral-medicinal waters (the largest thermal resort in France). The roughly 28 km descend to the Adour valley. Dax preserves its old cathedral, the historic thermal baths and a Gallo-Roman old quarter linked to the hot springs known since Roman times.
The last day of the Landes crossing. Between Taller and Dax the Way finally leaves the great pine forest and descends to the Adour valley, where the first city since Bordeaux awaits. The stage is long but without difficulty, with a flat profile and a slight final descent.
From Taller the route advances along forest tracks and local roads towards Gourbera and Herm, small villages surrounded by pines and oaks. The forest here is more varied and damper than on previous days, with streams, small ponds and clearings given over to maize.
The approach to the conurbation passes through Saint-Paul-lès-Dax, whose church preserves an exceptional Romanesque chevet: a frieze of carved reliefs, with biblical scenes and fantastic animals, runs around the outside of the apse. Close by, Lake Christus offers a tree-lined walk before entering the city.
The pilgrim crosses the Adour by the old bridge and enters the centre of Dax. The city grew up around its thermal springs, already exploited by the Romans, and is today the leading spa resort in France. In the heart of the historic centre, the Fontaine Chaude pours water at over sixty degrees into a large arcaded basin.
Dax preserves stretches of its Gallo-Roman wall and a classical cathedral that houses, inside, the Apostles' Doorway of the earlier Gothic church. With all services and a wide choice of accommodation, it is a fitting place to recover before the stages that lead to the Basque Country.
