Stage Description
The last stage of the Castellano Lebaniego Way is a pleasant walk through Liébana Valley that ends at the holy place. The profile is gentle, with an undulating terrain that runs alongside the river. The path passes by the village of Potes, capital of the comarca, before facing the gentle final ascent to the Monastery. Arrival in Santo Toribio de Liébana, one of the five Holy Sites of Christianity, and veneration of the Lignum Crucis (the largest piece of Christ's cross), is the end of the pilgrimage, a moment of deep spirituality and emotion.
The final stage of the Castellano Lebaniego Way is a short but symbolic journey. Starting from Pesaguero, the path descends gently through Liébana Valley, on a beautiful route with the Picos of Europe dominating the landscape. The route passes by the village of Potes, the vibrant capital of the region. It's highly recommended to make a stop to walk around its medieval old town, cross its bridges and enjoy its lively atmosphere. From Potes, only a few kilometers of gentle ascent remain until the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana. The arrival at the monastery is the climax of the pilgrimage. This place is one of the five places of worship in the world that have the privilege to celebrate the Perpetual Jubilee Year. Its greatest treasure is the Lignum Crucis, the relic that, according to tradition, is the largest piece preserved of Christ's cross. A visit to the church, veneration of the relic and a walk through the Gate of Forgiveness (on Jubilee year) are the end of a journey of faith and a moment of deep spiritual emotion.
