Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

Stage of the Camino de San Salvador in its Asturian section, following the Caudal river valley. The 16 km link Pola de Lena with Mieres through the old Asturian mining basin, today in transition after the closure of the wells. The route alternates urban sections with rural tracks along the slopes of the valley, with views of the Aramo mountain ranges. Mieres is the capital of the Caudal mining basin, with an urban center linked to the iron and steel industry and coal mining.
The stage between Pola de Lena and Mieres is a short but very favorable leg that immerses the pilgrim in the heart of the Minera Basins of Asturias. The landscape changes, and high mountain gives way to a wider and more populated valley, marked by its industrial past. The route follows the course of the Caudal River on a mostly flat journey. The path alternates sections along fluvial paths with sectors that run through more urbanized zones. The pilgrim will be able to observe the remnants of the past mining: castles, old railway tracks and working-class neighborhoods, which contrast with the green Asturian landscape. Arrival in Mieres, or Mieres on the Way, is the end of the stage. This village is one of the epicenters of Spain's mining history. Its industrial heritage, monuments to miners and lively atmosphere make it an interesting and different final leg. It is a journey to understand the social and economic history of Asturias, a cultural complement to the natural experience of the mountain.
