Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
This stage is an immersion in the Picos de Europa National Park. Leaving Potes, the path ascends gently through Camaleño valley, following the course of the Deva river. It's a day of great landscape beauty, with imposing mountain ranges as a backdrop. You pass by small traditional villages like Mogrovejo, with its medieval tower. The destination is Espinama, a mountain village located at the foot of the great peaks, serving as a base for exploring the massif and accessing the famous Fuente Dé cable car.
The stage between Potes and Espinama is a mountain day that brings the pilgrim into the heart of the Central Massif of the Picos de Europa. The profile is an ongoing but generally gentle ascent, which rises up the Camaleño valley.
The road, which mostly follows a local highway with little traffic, follows the course of the Deva River. The landscape is spectacular, with the imposing limestone walls of the Picos de Europa becoming increasingly close. Several small villages are crossed that preserve traditional Liébanan architecture.
One of the highlights is the diversion to the medieval town of Mogrovejo, declared a Historic Ensemble, which well deserves a visit for its tower and houses. Another milestone is the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana, destination of the Lebaniego Way, which is very close to the route and whose visit is almost obligatory.
The final stage ends in Espinama, a mountain village with an unmistakable alpine atmosphere. From here, one is just a step away from Fuente Dé, where a spectacular cable car saves a 750-meter gap in just a few minutes, leaving the visitor at the heart of the massif. Espinama is the perfect place for mountain lovers and those preparing to cross into Leónese territory.
