Stage Description
The stage connecting Puente la Reina with Estella is a beautiful 22-kilometer route that ventures into the heart of medieval Navarre. The landscape is dominated by fields of grain, vineyards and olive groves, on an undulating terrain with gentle ascents and descents. The road passes through medieval towns such as Mañeru, Cirauqui, with its impressive Roman road and bridge, and Villatuerta. It's a journey that invites you to enjoy the landscape and rich historical-artistic heritage along the route. The final stage arrives in Estella, "the Toledo of the North", a monumental city bathed by the River Ega, with an impressive Romanesque and Gothic legacy that deserves a afternoon of exploration.
The 22 km stretch between Puente la Reina and Estella immerses the pilgrim in a characteristically Navarran landscape, a sea of gently swaying fields under the sun. The journey is a constant up and down, with no great inclines but a broken-pavement profile that requires a steady pace.
The path, often on reddish earth tracks, is dotted with history. Villages are crossed that preserve their medieval essence. The first is Mañeru, followed by Cirauqui, one of the highlights of the stage. This town sits on a hill and the Camino crosses it over a perfectly preserved Roman road section, then crosses an ancient bridge before another medieval bridge. Further along, the route crosses another medieval bridge before arriving at Lorca, a good stopping point for an intermediate rest.
The landscape, dominated by vineyards, olive groves, and cereal fields, is open and luminous. Before reaching Estella, Villatuerta is passed through where a medieval two-arched bridge crosses over the Iranzu River. The arrival in Estella-Lizarra is the crowning glory of the journey. Known as "the Toledo of the North", the city offers an exceptional monumental heritage. The San Pedro de la Rúa church with its Romanesque cloister, the Palace of the Kings of Navarre, or the Santo Sepulcro church are just a few of the wonders that the pilgrim can discover while strolling along the banks of the Ega River, which divides the city. It is an obligatory stop for art and history lovers.
