Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

This is the final full stage in Portuguese territory. It's a gentle and pleasant day that descends into the valley of the Minho River. The road passes through rural landscape, with forests and villages, before arriving at the imposing fortified city of Valença do Minho, on the border itself. After exploring its spectacular fortress, the pilgrim crosses the International Bridge over the Minho, a moment of great symbolism. On the other side awaits Tui, the first Galician city, with its majestic cathedral-fortress, welcoming the final stages of the Camino.
The stage that unites Rubiães with Tui is the last entirely Portuguese and one of the most symbolic stages. The profile is very favorable, with a general trend descending towards the valley of the River Miño. The route runs through a rural landscape, through forests and villages, in an enjoyable and easy journey. The highlight of the first part is arriving at Valença do Minho. This bordering city is dominated by an impressive Vauban-style fortress, with a double-walled enclosure that houses an animated historic center full of shops and restaurants. It is essential to dedicate time to walk its walls. After the visit, the most exciting moment of the day arrives: crossing the International Iron Bridge designed by a disciple of Eiffel, which unites Portugal and Spain over the River Miño. Walking along its pedestrian path, leaving one country behind and entering another, is an unforgettable experience. On the other side of the bridge, the pilgrim is received by the monumental city of Tui. Its imposing Cathedral of Saint Mary, which looks like a fortress, and its well-preserved old town, are the perfect welcome to Galicia.
