Stage Description
The last fully meseta stage before plunging into the mountains of León. The day crosses the plain of Tierra de Campos heading towards León, largely following the line of the old Vía Trajana. Beyond Sahagún, pilgrims can choose between the historic route through Calzada del Coto and Calzadilla de los Hermanillos or the busier variant through Bercianos del Real Camino and El Burgo Ranero. Both merge on the way to Mansilla de las Mulas, a walled town on the banks of the Esla. The final stretch approaches León via Puente Villarente and Arcahueja. The terrain is flat and easy to ride, with the ultimate reward of arriving in León, a monumental city with its Gothic cathedral and the Royal Collegiate Church of San Isidoro.
This stage of around 55 kilometres completes the crossing of the meseta and leads to León, one of the great capitals of the Camino Francés. The route is flat and easy-rolling, ideal for keeping up a good pace on the bike across the cereal fields of León.
Leaving Sahagún, after crossing the bridge over the River Cea, the Camino forks. The historic route, through Calzada del Coto and Calzadilla de los Hermanillos, faithfully follows the Roman road of the Vía Trajana through solitary, service-free country. The more popular variant, through Bercianos del Real Camino and El Burgo Ranero, runs parallel to the road and offers more villages and hostels. Both options are perfectly cyclable.
The two routes come together near Reliegos and arrive together at Mansilla de las Mulas, a town that preserves much of its medieval walled enclosure beside the River Esla. It is the main hub of the stage and a good place to recover before the final stretch.
From Mansilla, the Camino approaches the León metropolitan area, crossing the Porma at Puente Villarente and passing through Arcahueja and Valdelafuente. The entrance to the city rewards the effort of the meseta: León unfolds an extraordinary heritage, with the Gothic cathedral of Santa María and its celebrated stained-glass windows, the Royal Collegiate Church of San Isidoro with its royal pantheon, and the Modernista façade of Gaudí's Casa Botines.
