Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
The way winds through green hills and pastureland, offering breathtaking views as height is gained. A key landmark is the refuge at Orisson, some 8 km from the start, a perfect place for a first rest and for looking back over the ground already covered. From here the climb continues, passing the statue of the Virgen de Biakorri, protector of shepherds. The landscape turns more alpine and exposed, culminating at the Col de Lepoeder, at 1430 metres, the highest point of the day. From this summit, on clear days, you can make out a sea of mountains and the descent that awaits towards Spain.
The last third of the stage is a technical and often slippery drop through a dense, magical beech forest. This descent, although a relief for the lungs, demands great concentration and punishes the knees. Arriving at the Real Colegiata de Roncesvalles, at 950 metres above sea level, is a moment of deep emotion and relief. This historic site, steeped in Carolingian legend, welcomes the pilgrim with its impressive buildings and an albergue that is a symbol of Jacobean hospitality. Completing this stage is a genuine feat that forges an indelible bond with the Camino.
