Stage Description
This stage is a considerable challenge, marked by a long and sustained ascent that takes the pilgrim from the valley to the village of Tineo, located over 650 meters above sea level. The route runs through mountain landscape, traversing oak and beech forests, and offering increasingly wider panoramic views as altitude increases. It's an introspective and exertive journey with long solitary stretches allowing for connection with pure Asturian nature. Arriving in Tineo, a village with deep Jacobean history and an important service center in the region, feels like a true conquest.
The Salas to Tineo stage is an demanding day that tests the pilgrim's ascending capacity. The profile is clear: a long and continuous ascent that saves a considerable difference in elevation, leading the walker to the heights of western Asturian country. The trail leaves Salas and quickly enters a mountainous environment. The route combines forest trails with paths that cross oak and beech forests. It is an episode of great scenic beauty, but one that requires a good dosage of effort. The ascent is progressive, without excessively difficult ramps, but its constancy can become exhausting. Passes through small villages like La Espina, a crossing point, before facing the final stretch towards Tineo. As you ascend, views open up, offering magnificent panoramic views of surrounding valleys and mountains. Arrival in Tineo, situated at the top of a hill, is a reward for effort. This village, of great historical importance on the Primitivo Path, was an important strategic point with several pilgrim hostels. Today it is the capital of the concejo and an important center of services. Its old town, although modified, preserves the church of San Pedro and the Palace of the García de Tineo. It is the perfect place to rest and prepare for the route bifurcation that awaits the next day.
