Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
Final section of the Arzúa–O Pedrouzo stage, linking the village of Salceda with O Pedrouzo (Arca) over a little more than eight kilometres. The Camino remains faithful to the landscape of Atlantic Galicia, undulating between eucalyptus groves and small hamlets that look onto the N-547 road, which it crosses several times with care. It passes through Cerceda, A Brea and the heights of Santa Irene, with its spring and its chapel dedicated to the Portuguese saint, before descending towards O Empalme and entering O Pedrouzo. It is a short stretch with a gentle profile, ideal for closing the day calmly on the threshold of the last night before Santiago.
These barely more than eight kilometres complete the stage that links Arzúa with O Pedrouzo, the last great stop on the way before Santiago. The terrain keeps the pleasant, wooded profile of the previous section, with gentle ups and downs and the constant company of the eucalyptus trees.
From Salceda, the Camino runs alongside the N-547, crossing it carefully at several points. The route passes through the places of A Brea and Cerceda, where a kilometre marker recalls that just over twenty kilometres remain to the cathedral, and once again slips into shaded hollow lanes (corredoiras).
The most distinctive point of the section is the heights of Santa Irene, a small corner with a spring of waters of good repute and a Baroque chapel dedicated to the saint of Portuguese origin. It is a fitting place for a last pause before tackling the gentle final descent.
After Santa Irene, the Camino descends to O Empalme, beside the road, and sets off on the final stretch among pine woods to O Pedrouzo, capital of the concello of O Pino —also known as Arca. The town, devoted to the pilgrim, concentrates hostels, hotels and restaurants along its main street and becomes the base camp from which, the following morning, the longed-for entrance into Santiago is undertaken.
