Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

This is a short and gentle stage that takes the pilgrim out of Valladolid's capital. The route is an enjoyable stroll that follows in large part along the banks of the Pisuerga River. The landscape is fluvial, with choperas and orchards. The arrival at the historic town of Simancas is the day's great prize. Dominated by its imposing castle, which houses the Archivo General de Simancas (one of Europe's most important archives), this locality offers a final stage of an incalculable cultural value.
The stage between Valladolid and Simancas is a short and pleasant journey, ideal for an initial contact or a relaxed walk. The departure from the large city of Valladolid is the most tedious part, but once you reach the banks of the Pisuerga River, the path becomes much more enjoyable. The route runs through a landscape of a vega, with choperas and areas of orchard. The profile is completely flat. The arrival in Simancas is the climax of the stage. This village, situated on a promontory over the river, has fundamental historical importance. Its castle, magnificently preserved, was converted by Felipe II into the General Archive of the Kingdom, and today it houses one of the most important documentary funds in the world. A visit to the castle and the old town of Simancas, with its medieval bridge and El Salvador church, is indispensable. It's a very culturally rich final stage.
