Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

This 21-kilometer stage marks the beginning of the epilogue of the Camino for many pilgrims. Leaving the Praza do Obradoiro, the route moves away from Santiago and enters rural Galicia. The profile is undulating, with a continuous rise and fall through forests of oaks and eucalyptus. The most notable point is the passage over Ponte Maceira, a spectacular medieval bridge over the Tambre River, with a set of mills and a waterfall that make it one of the most photographed places. The final day ends in the village of Negreira, an important service center with an urban palace and lively atmosphere, ideal for the first night on the camino towards the end of the world.
Leaving Santiago to reach Finisterre is a unique experience. The pilgrim, instead of arriving, goes on, initiating a symbolic journey towards the ocean, the end of the old world. This first stage of 21 km leaves the Galician capital to immerse himself in a rural landscape of great beauty.

The departure from the city is an urban walk that allows for one last look at the Cathedral. Soon, the asphalt gives way to dirt tracks that wind through gentle hills, oak and eucalyptus forests. The profile is constant scrambling, with no major difficulties but requiring a steady pace.

The highlight of the day is undoubtedly arriving at Ponte Maceira. This small nucleus is of extraordinary beauty. An imposing medieval five-arch bridge crosses the Tambre River, alongside a dam, a waterfall, and a set of watermills and a pazo. The place seems straight out of a story and is an obligatory stop for all pilgrims.

After Ponte Maceira, the path faces a final uphill climb before arriving in Negreira. This village, capital of the concello, is an important center of services, with a large range of hostels and restaurants. Its Pazo do Cotón, with its arches over the main street, and lively atmosphere, make it a perfect end to the stage.
