Stage Description

A stage through the heart of the classic Cantabrian coast. After leaving Santillana del Mar (declared a historic-artistic site, with its Romanesque collegiate church and emblazoned houses) the road runs along old cattle trails and rural roads to Comillas (22 km), a maritime town famous for modernism: it houses the Pontifical University (Domenech), the Palacio de Sobrellano (Martorell) and, above all, Gaudi's El Capricho, one of the few works of the architect outside Catalonia.
The stage that unites Baños de Montemayor with Fuenterroble de Salvatierra is a long and demanding day that involves crossing the Central System. The road leaves Baños and begins the ascent to the Béjar Pass, which marks the border between Extremadura and Castile and León. The climb is partly on the ancient Roman road. Beyond the pass, the landscape changes radically. The pilgrim enters the Salamanca tableland, in a landscape of oak woodlands and wild cattle farms. The route follows dirt tracks, in an environment of great beauty and solitude. Arrival at Fuenterroble de Salvatierra is one of the most special moments on the Way of the Plata. Its parochial hostel, run for decades by the charismatic Father Blas, is one of the most iconic and beloved places of all the Caminos de Santiago. The hospitality, community dinner, and fraternal atmosphere here are an unforgettable experience.
