Stage Description

A stage through the heart of the classic Cantabrian coast. After leaving Santillana del Mar (declared a historic-artistic site, with its Romanesque collegiate church and emblazoned houses) the road runs along old cattle trails and rural roads to Comillas (22 km), a maritime town famous for modernism: it houses the Pontifical University (Domenech), the Palacio de Sobrellano (Martorell) and, above all, Gaudi's El Capricho, one of the few works of the architect outside Catalonia.
This stage connects two of the most monumental villages in Cantabria. The route is a continuous rise and fall along the western coast, through a landscape of meadows and forests. It's a day of great beauty. Arrival in Comillas is an architectural surprise. This village hosts an impressive collection of modernist buildings, highlighting "The Capricho" by Gaudí and the Pontifical University. It's a stop of exceptional artistic value.
