Stage Description
This stage descends from the mountain to reach one of Andalusia's most monumental cities. The profile is predominantly descending. The landscape is a mix of low hills and fields of cultivation. Arrival in Antequera, "the heart of Andalusia", is spectacular. Its Alcazaba, Renaissance and baroque churches, and prehistoric dolmens, UNESCO World Heritage Site, make it a major cultural stop.
The journey that connects Villanueva de la Concepción with Antequera is a favorable profile stage that leads the pilgrim to one of Andalusia's cities with the most history. The road descends gently, through a landscape of olive groves and fields of grain. Arrival in Antequera is impressive. The city is dominated by its imposing Alcazaba and the Real Colegiata of Santa María la Mayor. Its old town is a maze of white streets, with over thirty churches and convents. But the greatest treasure of Antequera are its dolmens of Menga, Viera and El Romeral, one of Europe's most important megalithic complexes, declared World Heritage Site. A visit is indispensable. Antequera is an obligatory stop on the Camino Mozárabe, a place to dedicate time to and enjoy its immense heritage.
