Stage Description

The first stage of the Mozarabic Way from Málaga is an demanding day that takes the pilgrim away from the coast and into the Malaga Mountains. The profile is a continuous and pronounced ascent, which puts the legs to the test from the very first day. The landscape changes radically, from urban to mountainous terrain under almond trees. The views of Málaga Bay are spectacular. Arrival in Almogía, a white village nestled in the mountains, is the reward for a hard day's work.
The Camino Mozárabe begins in the vibrant city of Málaga. This first stage is a challenge that sets the tone for the route. The departure from the city is long and urban, but soon the path starts an unrelenting ascent to the Malaga Mountains. The climb is demanding, with dirt paths that wind their way up the slopes. As altitude is gained, views of the city and the Mediterranean Sea become increasingly impressive. The landscape is dominated by almonds, which in spring offer a display of white and pink flowers. It's an episode of great natural beauty and solitude. Arrival at Almogía, a typical white Andalusian village perched on the mountain, marks the end of the stage. Its ruined castle and steep streets are witnesses to its Moorish past. It's a perfect place for rest after such a hard day. The local cuisine, based on products from the mountains, is another of its great attractions.
